Does AL work in Vista?

It does work on Vista.

Make sure you extract the ZIP file and then start the .exe from the folder where you extracted the files to. If you still get an error, please post more details.

The attached pic is the error I get.  I can open it after I click ok, so I don't know what is not working.

That message indicates that you never used "Synchronize Library" (button at the bottom of the settings tab).
By doing that all files from all folders are indexed so the search function can find them.
The index is also used for the synchronized library tree.
